Breadboard is a turn of the century term used by home (hobby) electrical enthusiast who did not have the resources we have today. If a person wanted to learn about hooking up switches, lights and batteries to make the fundamental circuits, the cutting board in the kitchen could be used to make the hookups. Copper or brass nails driven part way into the board served as terminals. Wire and other parts could be attached to the board and tested. As vacuum tubes became available and radio became popular, more and more projects were home made and the breadboard (cutting board) was the available mounting surface. This was common practice from about 1905 thought the 50’s. School shops used wood planks to construct electrical projects in this period. Today we have proto typing boards that have taken the place of the cutting board. They work well until you have large or heavy parts. The term sticks with us. I think the shortage of breadboards gave rise to sliced bread!
